Corporate Snapshot
Through its majority-owned and controlled subsidiaries, ChinaTel Group, Inc. ("ChinaTel" or "the Company") provides fixed telephony, conventional long distance, high-speed wireless broadband, and telecommunications engineering and construction services. ChinaTel's strategy is to use its infrastructure and emerging market expertise to build Internet protocol (IP)-leveraged solutions worldwide. Today, there are multiple options for connecting to the Internet, including broadband wireline, Wi-Fi, and dial-up via a telephone connection. However, in rural or developing areas, many of these options are not available, as the installation of wired connections can be costly and Wi-Fi has a limited range. Additionally, dial-up connections are often slow and inadequate for today's desired applications. Proponents of Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) believe WiMAX technology addresses these limitations by providing high-speed broadband connections without the need to lay copper or fiber cabling while offering wireless access at greater ranges than Wi-Fi. At present, ChinaTel is focused on deploying a 3.5 gigahertz (GHz) WiMAX-based network that can serve residents, businesses, and government agencies across 29 cities in the People's Republic of China ("China" or "the PRC"). In March 2009, ChinaTel acquired a 49% interest in Chinacomm Ltd. (Cayman), part of CECT-Chinacomm Communications Co., Ltd., which is believed to be the fourth largest basic telecommunications service (BTS) operator in China. CECT-Chinacomm holds the PRC licenses needed to build the 3.5 GHz wireless broadband system and was recently commissioned to build a network for the Beijing Transport Ministry. ChinaTel also holds 95% of Perusat S.A., a telecommunications company that offers fixed telephony, long distance, and Voice over IP (VoIP) services in Peru.
