Corporate Snapshot

MIV Therapeutics, Inc. (MIVT) is an advanced stage research and development company, rapidly progressing towards commercializing the next generation of fully biocompatible coatings for passive and drug-eluting application on cardiovascular stents and other medical devices. In collaboration with scientists at the University of British Columbia (UBC), the Company has developed a unique coating technology that uses Hydroxyapatite (HAp)—a ceramic coating resembling human bone—on cardiovascular stents to prevent the blockage of arteries due to coronary artery disease (CAD). This proprietary, patented coating could prove to have superior biocompatibility and drug-eluting characteristics to polymer coatings currently marketed by leaders such as Johnson & Johnson (JNJ-NYSE) and Boston Scientific (BSX-NYSE). MIVT's coatings are designed to inhibit a variety of adverse and inflammatory reactions and potentially help reduce restenosis (re-blocking of the arteries following angioplasty) and thrombogenic (blood clotting) events. The Company has successfully completed a comprehensive range of biocompatibility tests, which have proven the exceptional physical capabilities of HAp. Preliminary animal trials completed recently at The University of Cape Town and at The Stellenbosch University in South Africa demonstrated safety and efficacy and have triggered preparations for full-scale histopathology porcine (pig) trials, scheduled to commence in the fourth-quarter 2004. Subsequent human clinical trials could occur in the second-quarter 2005. MIVT's novel coating technologies are developed as multi-platform solution that could offer unprecedented biocompatibility to a variety of cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular applications, including, but not limited to peripheral stents, biodegradable implants, delivery agents for chemotherapeutics, and others.
