Neah Power Systems, Inc. ("Neah" or "the Company") develops micro fuel cell technology for portable electronic devices using a patented, porous silicon-based design to provide long-lasting, efficient, and safe power solutions for the military, industrial, and consumer sectors. Neah's solution is based on proprietary silicon electrodes instead of the more commonly used proton exchange membrane (PEM) technology. As such, it enables a high power density, anaerobic and aerobic application, and an outsourced manufacturing model. In virtually all segments of the portable electronic device space, limitations imposed by existing portable power methods are a significant roadblock to enabling greater functionality and ease of use as markets continue to demand more wireless freedom. Fuel cells offer users longer run times with significant weight reductions versus traditional battery technologies. Neah is initially focused on creating a silicon-based fuel cell to address unmet need in the military market. Neah's portable fuel cell is powered by methanol fuel cell cartridges. Instead of a soldier carrying half a dozen of the conventional batteries, which can weigh several pounds each, a soldier can carry a fuel cell and multiple small cartridges of methanol to replenish the fuel cell. Each methanol cartridge could weigh less than a battery and result in a >60% weight reduction for a 72-hour mission. Neah's technology is now in the engineering and development phase, with a working prototype previously demonstrated.
