Protein Polymer Technologies, Inc. is a development-stage biotechnology company engaged in the research, development, and production of bio-active devices to improve medical and surgical outcomes. The Company is primarily focused on developing protein polymers that are useful in products for (1) soft tissue augmentation, (2) tissue adhesives and sealants, (3) wound healing support, and (4) drug delivery devices. Its products are based on a new generation of biomaterials designed to aid in the process of bodily repair by promoting the healing of tissue and restoring its form and function. These platform biomaterials are genetically engineered, high molecular weight proteins, processed into products with tailored physical structure and biological characteristics. The Company's products under development are based on the combined properties of two proteins found in nature—silk and elastin. Silk has demonstrated extraordinary strength and a long history of medical use in sutures, while elastin has remarkable flexibility and is used throughout the human body. Selectively incorporating silk and elastin "blocks" with additional design features in the form of polymers has enabled Protein Polymer Technologies to develop multifunctional products that possess distinctive features and benefits and address a variety of large, unmet market needs.
