Refocus Group, Inc. is a medical device company specializing in the research and development of surgical treatments for human vision disorders. The Company is primarily involved in developing its patented PresVIEW™ System, which is utilized in its Scleral Spacing Procedure (SSP). SSP is a minimally invasive procedure aimed at treating presbyopia, an age-related condition that hampers the eye's ability to focus; ocular hypertension (OHT), a buildup of fluid within the eye; and primary open angle (POA) glaucoma, a common consequence of OHT. Refocus Group's technology addresses the aforementioned disorders by re-establishing natural tissue spacing surrounding the crystalline lens—allowing the eye to accommodate or focus near in the case of presbyopia, and promoting the outflow and natural stabilization of intraocular pressure (IOP) in the case of OHT and POA glaucoma. The Company expects to begin Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Phase II clinical trials later in 2003 as the PresVIEW™ SSP has shown an excellent safety profile in FDA Phase I clinical trials and numerous other investigational surgeries to date with little or no side effects. A targeted "seeding" European commercial launch could occur in the second half of 2003. The Company also anticipates a limited number of clinical and/or commercial sites in Canada will perform the PresVIEW™ SSP by the end of 2003, subject to Health Canada approval.
