Unigene Laboratories, Inc. is a biopharmaceutical company focused on oral and nasal delivery of small protein drugs called peptides as a potential alternative to injectable formulations for large medical markets. Currently, most commercial peptide products are available exclusively in injectable or nasal spray formulations since they are broken down by the digestive system. Unigene's patented delivery technologies have been shown to deliver medically useful amounts of various peptides into the bloodstream. The Company has initially targeted its therapies for the worldwide osteoporosis market, developing calcitonin, a chemical messenger that helps regulate normal blood calcium levels and reduce progressive bone loss, and an analog of parathyroid hormone (PTH), a natural peptide that promotes bone formation. Additionally, Unigene possesses patented manufacturing technology that is capable of producing extremely large quantities of peptides while significantly reducing production costs. This may uniquely enable the Company to commercialize certain peptide drugs in oral form.
